Our History

A Man-Made Oasis in the Mallee Region

For nearly 100 years, Lake Cullulleraine has been bringing people together. What began as a 1920s irrigation project to support Millewa farmers transformed into one of the Sunraysia region's most beloved lakeside destinations.

our story

THE STORY OF LAKE CULLULLERAINE

Lake Cullulleraine wasn't always the permanent water paradise you see today. Originally, it was a natural ephemeral wetland, a dry depression that would only fill during major floods of the Murray River. For thousands of years, the Latji Latji people knew this land, with evidence of their rich cultural heritage still present in shell middens, surface scatterings, and scarred trees throughout the region.

Everything changed in the 1920s when the post-World War I Millewa farming settlement scheme needed a reliable water source. In 1926, over 500 men were employed to construct an impressive irrigation system connecting the lake to the Murray River via Lock 9. They built channels, established a pumping station, and transformed the seasonal wetland into a permanent 184-hectare lake.

During construction, those workers and their families lived right here at Lake Cullulleraine. A bustling temporary township sprang up with several stores, a Post Office (which opened on November 17, 1924), and a school built in 1924. Though the school closed in 1948 and the pumping station was later converted to electric pumps when the Millewa connected to the state power grid in the 1960s, the lake remained the heart of the community.

Today, Lake Cullulleraine sits 9 metres above the Murray River level and maintains a steady water supply year-round, making it the perfect spot for swimming, fishing, water skiing, and all the activities that bring families here season after season.

Where History Meets Modern Comfort

TRANQUIL WATERS TODAY

Nearly 100 years after Lake Cullulleraine was created, Tranquil Waters continues the tradition of lakeside hospitality with a modern touch. Our brand new 2022 amenities bring comfort to the camping experience, while our spacious grassed sites maintain that classic Australian lakeside camping feel.

Maureen and Pip have built on decades of history by adding glamping options for those who want the outdoor experience without the setup, expanding the on-site cafe menu (our pizzas and Fisherman's Basket are legendary), and making sure every camper, whether it's your first visit or your fiftieth, feels genuinely welcome.

The lake itself remains the star. Fed by the Murray River through the same channel system built in the 1920s, Lake Cullulleraine offers year-round swimming, fishing for Murray cod and yellowbelly, kayaking, water skiing, and peaceful lakeside moments that haven't changed in generations. The 10.4km walking trail, sporting facilities, and native wildlife still draw visitors from across Australia.

Today, Tranquil Waters is where families create new holiday traditions, school groups experience outdoor education, and fishing enthusiasts chase their next big catch, all on the banks of a lake that's been bringing people together for nearly a century.
